Laboratory Specialist -Histotechnologist

Job Description

A laboratory specialist (histotechnologist) position has become available in the Histology/Histopathology Laboratory at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Falaj Hazza Facility, United Arab Emirates University. The major responsibilities for this position include performing routine histological and laboratory procedures involving fixing, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of animal tissues as required for teaching, diagnostic, and research purposes. The successful candidate should be able to perform routine H&E staining technique unsupervised as well have the ability to do an array of special stains including but not limited to Alcian blue, toluidine blue, Masson’s trichrome, PAS, Warthin starry, Gomori methanamine silver, Perl’s blue, Von Kossa, Ziehl Nielsen, Van Giessen, and Gram’s tissue stain. The roles of this position will also involve operating a Tissue-Tek VIP Jr Vacuum Infiltration Automatic Tissue Processor, STP 250 Tissue Processor, Accu-cut SRM 200 Rotary Microtome, YD 355AT Automatic Microtome, YD-6L2 Tissue Embedding Center, and YD Cryostat-1900, among other specialized laboratory equipment. While the essential functions of the position are mainly related to routine tissue processing, the laboratory specialist will be required to work with the cryostat and frozen sections as well as performing immunohistochemistry and fluorescent antibody tests within the context of the teaching, diagnostic and research missions of the department. Besides these roles, the successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining an inventory of all consumables and other requirements for the Histology/Histopathology and Clinical Pathology Laboratories.

Minimum Qualification

BSc degree or first degree in Medical Laboratory Technology plus certification in histotechnology.

Preferred Qualification

In addition to the BSc degree, candidates with a Master’s degree in Histology or any other relevant field will be highly regarded

Expected Skills

The preferred candidate should have at least 5 years of verifiable working experience as a histotechnologist in a busy histology laboratory. Candidates that have cross training and/or working background in haematology, cytology, urinalysis and other clinical pathology techniques will be favourably considered.

Salary Range
