Research Assistant in Airship-based 5G Communication Systems
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a Research Assistant to join a multidisciplinary project exploring the use of small airships as temporary 5G communication hubs for remote regions. The selected candidate will contribute to theoretical modeling, CFD simulations, and hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) development, focusing on flight control, aerodynamic optimization, structural analysis, and 5G technology integration. The role will involve computational modeling (CFD, MATLAB/Simulink), control system development, hardware testing, and participation in flight test campaigns. Strong collaboration with the team in simulation and prototyping efforts is expected. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on a high-impact project addressing connectivity gaps in remote and underserved areas. The candidate will be part of a team that is advancing smart city infrastructure, sustainable airborne platforms, and digital equity through engineering innovation.
A bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, or Communication Engineering. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in: • Strong background in Flight Mechanics and Control • Good background in Aerodynamics • MATLAB/Simulink modeling • Basic electronics and control systems knowledge
• Experience with UAVs, airships, or LTA systems • Knowledge of 5G communication technologies • Strong background in numerical modeling (CFD/FEA), prototyping, and experimental testing • Publications in peer-reviewed conferences/journals are a plus
